Jane Austen says that Lydia has "high animal spirits and a sort of natural self-consequence" which is Austen’s subtle way of satirizing people who think they are all that. We all know people like that, don’t we? This is what makes Austen’s novels so relatable even today: the people in her world can also be found in ours.
